Do veneers need a night guard?
Not everyone needs one, but if you grind or clench, a custom night guard is a common way to protect veneers and the teeth underneath.
Not always. If you do not grind or clench, you may not need one. If you do, a custom guard is one of the most practical ways to protect your veneers. Grinding puts heavy, repeated stress on teeth and restorations, and porcelain can chip or crack under that load.
Why grinding matters for veneers
Bruxism means clenching, grinding or gnashing the teeth, often without realizing it, and often during sleep. Over time it can wear and crack natural teeth. Veneers face the same forces. Dental guidance notes that people who clench or grind may not be good candidates for veneers, and the research literature lists severe grinding as a reason for caution or for choosing stronger materials.
Signs you might grind
- Waking with a sore jaw, face or headache.
- A partner hearing grinding at night.
- Flattened, chipped or worn teeth.
- Sensitive teeth without an obvious cause.
- Tight or tired jaw muscles.
Stress, anxiety, sleep problems, some medications and heavy caffeine or alcohol use are linked with grinding. It is a reflex, so it is not something you can simply decide to stop.
Custom guard or store-bought?
A dentist can make a custom mouth guard fitted to your teeth. Fit matters with veneers, because the guard should spread force evenly without catching on edges. Over-the-counter guards exist, but ask your dentist before using one over veneers.
A guard only works if you wear it, so comfort and fit are worth getting right. A few habits help it last:
- Wear it when grinding is most likely, which for most people is at night.
- Rinse and clean it after each use and let it dry.
- Bring it to checkups so it can be inspected for wear.
- Replace it if it cracks, warps or stops fitting well.
At your consultation
Tell your dentist if you have ever been told you grind, or if you notice any of the signs above. Ask whether your bite puts extra stress on the front teeth and whether a guard is part of your plan. Whether you need one depends on an exam, but it is far easier to protect veneers than to replace them.
