Gum symmetry: the frame most people forget
Even, gently scalloped gums frame a smile, and uneven or puffy gum lines can undermine otherwise good veneers.
Teeth get the attention, but the gums are the frame. Gum lines that are even, healthy and gently curved make teeth look well proportioned. Gum lines that are uneven, swollen or showing too much can make even beautiful veneers look off. Gum symmetry is often what separates good work from a truly finished result.
What healthy gum design looks like
Healthy gums are firm and pink, with a scalloped edge that arches over each tooth. The highest point of each arch is called the gingival zenith. On the front teeth, the gum lines are usually matched from left to right: the two centrals at similar heights, the laterals often sitting slightly lower, and the canines up near the level of the centrals. Small papillae fill the triangles between teeth.
When gum levels are uneven, or teeth look short because gum tissue covers more of them than usual, periodontists can reshape the tissue. The American Academy of Periodontology notes that crown lengthening can be done on one tooth to even the gum line or on several teeth to reveal a broader smile. In some cases this is planned together with veneers so the teeth and the gums are designed as one.
Excellent work vs. the giveaway
- Excellent: gum lines on the left and right match, with a soft arch over each tooth.
- Excellent: tissue looks pink and tight around the edges of restorations.
- Giveaway: one front tooth with a noticeably higher or lower gum line than its twin.
- Giveaway: red, puffy or bleeding gums along the edges of veneers or crowns, which can point to bulky margins or plaque build-up.
- Giveaway: dark triangles or a gray line at the gumline next to restorations.
How to check it yourself
- Lift your upper lip gently in a mirror and look at the gum line straight on. Compare each tooth with its partner on the other side.
- Take a photo of your widest smile. Notice how much gum shows and whether it is even.
- Look at the color of the gums along any veneers or crowns. Healthy tissue should match the gums elsewhere.
- Floss. Persistent bleeding around one restoration is worth mentioning to a dentist.
Gum work is a medical decision, not just a cosmetic one, and the cause of uneven gums matters. At a consultation, ask whether your gum levels were evaluated as part of the plan, whether a periodontist should be involved and what the options are. An in-person exam is needed to tell what is driving your gum line.
