Reading the gumline

Gums frame the teeth: their health, height and symmetry can make a smile look polished or unfinished, and some gum issues need treatment before veneers.

Most people judge a smile by the teeth. Dentists look at the gums first. The gumline is the frame, and a beautiful picture in a crooked frame still looks off.

Health comes before design

Veneers are only placed on a healthy foundation. Gum disease and decay need to be treated before cosmetic work starts. Red, swollen or bleeding gums around veneers are not a style choice. They are a sign to see a dentist.

What a well-framed smile looks like

  • Firm, pink gums with a natural scalloped shape around each tooth.
  • Central incisors with gum heights that match each other closely.
  • A gumline that follows the curve of the upper lip rather than fighting it.
  • No dark gaps, ledges or puffiness where veneers meet the gum.
  • Teeth that look a natural length, not short and buried or long and exposed.

Short teeth, long teeth, uneven heights

Teeth that look short are sometimes normal teeth covered by extra gum tissue. Periodontists can use crown lengthening to remove excess tissue and reshape the gumline, exposing more of the tooth. Teeth that look too long may have gum recession, which can expose roots. Gum graft and root coverage procedures are designed to cover exposed roots and help protect them.

Symmetry matters most at the front. Research on smile perception suggests that dental professionals are more critical of small gum height differences than the general public, and that laypeople tend to notice differences between the front teeth when they reach around 2 mm. That is one reason the planning stage matters. A gum issue that is easy to correct before veneers can be hard to hide after.

Veneers are designed to the gum. If the gumline is uneven, the veneers can inherit the problem, with one tooth looking longer than its neighbor. If the gums change after veneers are placed, edges can become visible. Planning the frame before the picture tends to give a more predictable result.

At your consultation

Ask whether your gums are healthy enough for cosmetic work, whether your gum heights are even, and whether gum treatment should come first. If gum surgery is suggested, ask who will do it and how it fits the timeline. Only an exam can tell you what your own gums need.
