Is the dentist licensed in Florida? Check it yourself in two minutes
The Florida Department of Health runs a free online license lookup; use it to confirm any dentist's license before cosmetic work.
Before anyone touches your teeth, confirm they are licensed to practice dentistry in Florida. You do not need to take anyone's word for it. The Florida Department of Health runs a free public lookup, and it takes about two minutes.
Where to look
The official tool is the Florida Department of Health's MQA Search Portal. MQA stands for Medical Quality Assurance, the division that licenses health care practitioners in the state. The Florida Board of Dentistry, which oversees dentists, dental hygienists and dental laboratories, also has a Verify a License link on its website.
Use the official .gov site, not a third-party directory or review site. Those can be out of date or incomplete.
How to search
- Go to the MQA Search Portal and choose License Verification.
- In the Board/Council menu, select Board of Dentistry. You can also narrow the Profession field.
- Enter the dentist's last name, and first name if you know it. The form also accepts a license number, city, county or zip code.
- Open the result for the right person and read the details.
If you get no results, use fewer fields. The portal itself suggests this, and spelling differences and middle names often trip up searches.
What to check
- The name matches the dentist who will actually do your treatment, not only the practice owner.
- The license is for dentistry, not a different profession.
- The license status shows it is current and active.
- Any discipline. The portal has a separate Discipline & Admin Actions search for practitioners.
A past disciplinary action is not automatically a deal breaker, but you should understand what it was and when. Ask about it directly. A clear explanation is a good sign. Evasion is not.
Why it matters for cosmetic work
Cosmetic treatment is often elective and irreversible. Veneers, crowns and reshaping remove tooth structure that does not grow back. You want the person doing it to be accountable to the Florida Board of Dentistry, with a record you can look up.
Licensing is the floor, not the ceiling. A license confirms someone may legally practice dentistry in Florida. It does not tell you how much cosmetic work they do. After the lookup, ask how often they place veneers, whether you can see unedited photos of their own cases, and who on the team will handle each step. Then book an in-person exam, because the right plan depends on your mouth, not a website.
