Will I see a preview first? You should, on your own teeth
For veneers and smile design, ask for a physical mock-up on your unprepared teeth so you can judge the result before anything is removed.
You should. For veneers and other irreversible cosmetic work, a preview on your own teeth is one of the most useful steps in the process. It lets you see, feel and talk with the new shape before any enamel is removed, while saying no is still easy.
What a real preview looks like
A typical sequence goes like this. The dentist takes photos and a scan or impressions. A diagnostic wax-up, physical or digital, models the proposed tooth shapes on a copy of your teeth. That design is then transferred to your mouth in temporary tooth-colored material placed over your natural, unprepared teeth.
Published case work describes this mock-up as a physical, tentative outcome the patient can evaluate before irreversible preparation, and notes that because it is reversible, treatment can still be changed, postponed or cancelled. Some digital workflows add a second step, milled temporaries placed over untouched teeth, as a final check before preparation begins.
Why a screen is not enough
Digital smile-design images are helpful for discussion, but they are pictures. A mock-up shows how the teeth look against your lips, in daylight, when you speak and when you laugh. It also shows how they feel. Length that looks great in a photo can feel strange when you say F and V sounds.
There is a clinical benefit too. A mock-up can serve as a guide for preparation depth, helping the dentist remove only what the final design needs.
Your preview checklist
- Ask whether you will see a mock-up on your own teeth before preparation.
- Look in natural light, not only under the dental lamp.
- Smile, talk and take photos and short videos from normal distances.
- Ask someone you trust for an honest opinion.
- Ask what can still change: length, edges, width, shade.
- Make sure you approve the design before treatment starts.
If there is no preview
Not every case needs a full mock-up. A single bonded chip may not. But if you are changing several front teeth, and especially if enamel will be removed, ask why a preview is not part of the plan. Good cosmetic dentistry does not announce itself, and the preview is where you find out whether yours will.
